• Sectional removal from the top down, where there is no room to drop a tree whole. Helmet, face shield and hearing protection on, saw on the harness.
• Setting the rigging before anything is cut. The gear on the harness is the plan.
• Disaster relief work in Arden, North Carolina — every tree along this stretch was ours. Storm response takes us out of state as well as across the counties.
• Clearing overgrown brush back off open ground.
• The crew and the machines that do the heavy end of the work.
• Saws and steel. Most jobs need both.
• Helmets, hearing and eye protection on before the truck doors shut.
• Running a hardwood log through the mill. Not every trunk has to leave as firewood.
• Picking up rock, not brush. Alongside the tree work we take on flood mitigation, French drains and pond expansion — our mini track hoe does a lot more than move timber.
• The native plant half of the job: knowing what belongs here and what it does.
• Young squirrels in our care, back when we were sub-permitted under a state-licensed wildlife rehabilitator. We no longer take rehab cases.
